Until 1984, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), specifically its Special Branch, performed the internal security function for Canada. In 1984, following a series of "scandals" and parliamentary inquiries (see below, "Commission of Inquiry Concerning Certain Activities of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police"), the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) was created as Canada's domestic security and intelligence organization.
An organizational chart of CSIS appears at CASIS Intelligence Newsletter 31 (Winter 1998): 17.
