Sigl, Rupert. In the Claws of the KGB: Memoirs of a Double Agent. Ardmore, PA: Dorrance, 1978.
Clark comment: Sigl worked as a KGB agent for over 15 years until his defection to U.S. intelligence in 1969.
Pforzheimer views the book as "rich in case details and insights." Constantinides says that intelligence experts "regard this as a useful model of Soviet recruitment and use of agents." Note that Pforzheimer identifies Sigl as an Austrian, while Constantinides says he was a German.

According to Constantinides, Silber was a German agent who worked in British censorship in World War I. His books claim many heady accomplishments, but independent confirmation is lacking.

Silberzahn, Claude, with Jean Guisnel. Au coeur du secret, 1.500 jours aux commandes de la DGSE, 1989-1993. Paris: Fayard, 1995.
Pennetier, I&NS 11.4, comments that Silberzahn's four years as DGSE head saw "a major shakeup of France's services." In this book, Silberzahn details the changes he made in the service, but seems "prone to exaggerate ... the impact of his actions." At other times, "he succumbs to banalities, giving the book the tone of a recruitment prospectus." Nevertheless, this book "gives the reader an invaluable occasion to study and assess an intelligence service in mutation."

Peake, Studies 49.2 (2005), notes that this small book (108 pages) contains "five chapters of anecdotes.... Not all of the stories are funny, but they are all instructive.... This little book will bring pleasure to many and probably invoke similar memories in other officers."

Sillitoe, Percy [Sir]. Cloak Without Dagger. London: Cassell, 1955. New York: Abelard-Schuman, 1955.
Constantinides: Sillitoe headed MI5 from 1946 to 1953, but most of the book concerns his long career in the colonies and in the United Kingdom. "Little is said of his experience" at MI5's helm. Cockerill's biography, Sir Percy Sillitoe (1975), does little to rectify the situation.
